1. Heterogeneous catalysts
Heterogeneous catalysts are substances that are distinctive from the reactants. For example, reagents can be solid, while reactants can be liquid or gaseous. A heterogeneous catalyst is a catalytic converter in gasoline or diesel-fueled cars is one general example.
2. Homogeneous catalysts
Homogeneous catalysts work in the same stage as the reactants, but the mechanical principles implored in heterogeneous catalysis are generally applicable. Commonly, homogeneous catalysts are dissolved in a solvent together with the substrates.
